Dog Potty Training: How To Handle Potty Accidents

If you’re new to dog potty training, you know it’s not always easy as a new dog owner. You may feel overwhelmed with all the mess your puppy leaves behind and want to know how to potty train your dog. Not to worry… This is all part of the journey! The good news is that with the right dog potty training tips, you can turn accidents into valuable lessons and keep your house fresh and clean! Here are three simple ways to make the process less stressful for both you and your pup.

1.  Clean Up Right Away!

Speed is your best friend when cleaning up! Use an enzyme cleaner as soon as an accident happens to tackle the mess right away. Enzyme cleaners help break down the odor completely. Using soap or bleach won’t hide the scent; your dog will still be able to smell it and may try to go again in the same spot.

2. Redirect With Calmness

If you catch your pup mid-squat, mid-sniff, or about to go, stay calm and gently redirect your puppy. Use a friendly phrase and take them straight to their potty spot. Whether you’re doing indoor potty training or outdoor potty training, it’s always good to have a designated area for pottying. Avoid yelling or punishment, as it can make your dog nervous and more likely to hide accidents instead of learning the right spot!

3. Celebrate Every Success

As soon as your dog finishes going in the right place. Reward them with a nice treat, lots of praise, or some playtime! Reward your dog within seconds so they know they've pottied in the right spot. Over time, this positive association will make your dog eager to keep doing it right.
